The Vision

Mission

In the early 1990s, Pehucci’s founder, The Late Reverend Lucy Njenga, took a bold and compassionate step by opening the very first shelter for children she encountered living on the streets of Nairobi.
In 1993, she purchased a 100m by 100m plot in Ruai Estate, about 15 km north of the city, and constructed a small mud hut with a grass-thatched roof.
With limited resources but abundant compassion, she created a safe home where children received food, clothing, and the warmth of belonging.
Many of these children had suffered neglect, poverty, and infestations such as jiggers, yet Lucy’s unwavering dedication provided them a sanctuary of hope.
This humble beginning became the cornerstone of Pehucci’s mission—to restore dignity, nurture potential, and offer every child the opportunity for a brighter future.

Lucy Njenga’s lifelong commitment to helping vulnerable children began in her youth, assisting her mother, a social worker, in supporting needy communities.
By 1988, driven by compassion and a deep sense of purpose, Lucy left her government role at the Attorney General’s Chambers to dedicate her life to children in need.
In 1992, after graduating with a diploma in Theology from St. Paul’s College and being ordained as a Reverend in the ACK Church, she began ministering full-time to destitute children at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park.
Providing food, clothing, and care from her own resources, she faced criticism from friends and family, yet her dedication never wavered.
By 1995, Lucy received 500,000 KSH in retirement benefits, which she invested into expanding the home.
With support from Pastor Tony of PAC University and international donors such as Charles Brakes (USA), classrooms, dormitories, a kitchen, and toilets were constructed, creating a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for the children.

Early days

Pehucci Children’s Home continued to flourish thanks to the generous support of local and international organizations.
In 2002, Baptist Mission USA, led by Joy Casner, built a small office, while Lutheran World Relief contributed additional classrooms, and The Living Water Ministry ensured clean water through a borehole and reliable power via a generator.
Today, the home supports over 175 children, providing not only food, clothing, and education, but also books, toys, and countless opportunities for growth within a nurturing, community-focused environment.
The legacy of Pehucci goes far beyond physical infrastructure. Volunteers, donors, and community members play a vital role in sustaining programs, guiding the children, and creating brighter futures.
With separate boys’ and girls’ dormitories, a dining hall, a canteen, and a community center, Pehucci offers a holistic and safe environment where children can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Volunteers and community partners have always been the heart of Pehucci’s journey. From teaching and mentoring to hands-on support in the home, their dedication sustains vital programs and helps expand the reach of Lucy’s vision.
Every donation and act of service directly transforms the lives of children, providing essential education, healthcare, and emotional support.
Together, we give hope, nurture potential, and create brighter futures—one child at a time.
